No one mourns the “Wicked”
I’m definitely loading up on shows lately and keeping myself busy – no complaints here! I have “Book of Mormons” with C, Nemo and the bf in a few weeks, which I’m totally stoked for. Initially, the four of us had planned to see “Wicked,” but because of certain circumstances, we opted for “Mormons” instead. I was a little bummed because I’ve always wanted to watch “Wicked” and I love anything to do with musical theatre. Thankfully, my bf found a deal on a daily deal site and being the sweet guy that he is, he got us tickets to see the show with his two friends P and J.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the back story for “Wicked,” it’s basically the prequel to “Wizard of Oz”. It focuses on the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and the Good Witch of the East (the artist formerly known as “GA-linda” aka Glinda [if you've seen the show - you would get this joke]). The show runs for about 2 hours and 45 minutes – with one 15 minute intermission. It’s a great show for the entire family. Parents who were fans of “Wizard of Oz” when they were younger will appreciate this twist to the storyline, and kids will enjoy the music and dancing.
The overall visuals were really impressive and the performers were on point. The two lead actresses, Kara Lindsay (Glinda) and Laurel Harris (Elphaba) were incredible. I would’ve loved to see the original cast with Adele Dazeem…I mean, Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth, but these two leads more than made up for that. Their vocals were strong and they really played up their parts to a tee. I particularly enjoyed Kara Lindsay’s portrayal of a ditzy, airheaded witch – I couldn’t help but chuckle a few times throughout the show.
I’ve seen quite a few theatre shows so far, but this one is definitely near the top of the list. The songs were catchy, the storyline was easy to follow and entertaining, and I had no complaints about any of the actors/actresses.
If you haven’t seen “Wicked” – I highly recommend it! It’s a great way to spend an evening out for a date or with family and friends.
Here are my favourite songs from the show (performed by the original cast):
