“I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen”
I’ve seen a lot of romantic flicks in my time and while I’m not the biggest fan of them – there have been a few that have really left an impression. If you’re a movie buff, then you’ll know that the title of this blog piece is referencing Cameron Crowe’s “Say Anything…”. It stars John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler – an awkward and average teenager who is always seen wearing an oversized trenchcoat. He falls in love with the overachiever Diane Court – played by Ione Skye.
This movie is my definition of romance. Why? Well, tell me who wouldn’t love a guy who stands outside their window holding up a boombox. Do you know how heavy boomboxes are? It’s no easy feat. Plus, not to mention, Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” is easily one of my favourite movie tracks.
Okay, so maybe some people would find that a little overly dramatic and borderline creepy. But the relationship between the two lead characters is so beautifully awkward (and I mean that in the best way possible), that the boombox totally works. As an awkward person, it’s actually refreshing to see a movie that’s reflective of all those awkward moments that many of us often have when we first start dating or crush on someone.
The simplicity of their relationship is what really makes me fall in love with this movie. From Lloyd teaching Diane how to drive stick to him comforting her while they wait for a plane ride to begin, these normal, everyday moments don’t scream romance, but that’s why I love it so much. It’s the little things that count, right?
Sure, I love the typical romance flicks like “The Notebook” and pretty much any John Hughes’ film like “Sixteen Candles,” but none of them hold a flame (pun intended) to “Say Anything…”. I don’t buy movies that often, but I definitely have this in my collection.
I’m going to leave you with Peter Gabriel’s track “In Your Eyes” (because it’s all sorts of awesome) with clips from the film.
Here are some of my favourite quotes from the movie:
“I am looking for a dare to be great situation”
“You must chill. You must chill. ”
“What I really want to do with my life – what I want to do for a living – is I want to be with your daughter. I’m good at it. ”
“Why do you eat that stuff? There’s no food in your food.“
