I know this addiction is unhealthy. I probably realized this a few months ago, when we started doing escape rooms more than 2 or 3 times a week to get our fix. The realization: we have spent a LOT of money on escaping, but it’s been extremely fun (for the most part) and I have no regrets.

It’s been more than a year since the first escape room business (ESC-IT) opened up on West Beaver Creek in Markham. Since then, there have been a myriad of other escape room businesses opening up and ESC-IT has even moved to a new location. From single rooms to multi-rooms, low production value to super cool triggers/mechanisms, we found ourselves escaping more rooms than we could count.

It takes time for people to get used to escaping with others because it’s partially learning what each person’s strengths and weaknesses are. Unfortunately, my core team has slowly fallen apart over time due to team member relocations to places outside of Toronto and the addiction/novelty wearing off for others. Carson and I have slowly started to venture into escape rooms with new people, but never with strangers. We have yet to attempt escaping from a large scale room (i.e. groups larger than 6) or partner up with randoms that we don’t know.

Finally, we get to the crux of the matter at hand. I think all my close friend have asked the same question. You’re always checking into an escape room. How many of these rooms have you done? After seeing the escape room blogs like TORONTO ESCAPE GAMES, ESCAPISTTO and ESCROOMADDICT, I feel like I should list the ones that I’ve done as well. Sometimes it is nice to read reviews before going to do a room so you know what to expect. Don’t know if I’ll do the reviews, but I think it’s time I actually tried to list out all the rooms I’ve done.

I think I’ve gone over 70 by now. My count in the original post was something like 67 and I’ve already done a few more…

  • Hi there! I’ve been looking into escape rooms lately and I came across this blog. I have a few questions.

    -Are escape rooms typically scary?
-What advice can you give to a complete noob? :P
-How were the rooms at Trapped?

    Thanks a lot!

Hi Ronnie! Great questions. Have you done any escape rooms at all?
I find that most are not scary but there are a few eerie themed ones. If you like scary, I would recommend Haunting of Noriko. Start with a few of the simpler/easier rooms before getting into that one though. Best advice I could give would be to communicate and be open with your team. There may be something you noticed which you think may not be something, but could trigger something for another member of your team. Better to say it than regret not saying it later. :) Also, go with a team of mixed bag people. These rooms are generally designed for teams with a variety of skills (observation, math, logic, memory, etc) and you don’t want everyone to be superb at one thing but have a blind spot on others.
As for the rooms at Trapped, is there a particular room or theme that interests you? They are one of the places that user more tech/gadgets in their room designs. I’ll admit I wasn’t a huge fan of all their rooms but I do find some of their puzzles clever and they do have a nice set up there. I recently noticed that they made a new room available, but I haven’t had the chance to go yet as it requires a larger group and I rarely go with groups larger than 5 or 6 people.

      • Hi again :) Thank you so much for the tips! I’ll definitely keep them in mind. I’m going to my first escape room in a few days, so I’m pretty excited/nervous/excited.

Hmmm…eerie? I might try something “scary” if I can build up the nerve, but eerie doesn’t sound too bad. *lets out a sigh of relief*

As for Trapped, the two that I’m interested in are the Medieval one and the Ancient Pyramid. I heard about the new room as well. If I’m not mistaken, I think that one is for people who get to a “Level 2″ membership. The premise sounds pretty neat, though.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. You’ve been a huge help!

Yes. Level 2 membership only. I’ve done all the rooms there, but not very many people have. And considering the size of the group needed for the room, I honestly don’t know if I’ll have that many people to do it with. I’m not a huge fan of doing these things with people I don’t know either since I like knowing the strengths and weaknesses on my team.
Which room did you end up checking out? How did that go?

  • Holy cow, you guys have done so much! And especially around Markham/Scarborough.

    We should dish sometime!
